Justice for Randall Echanis!
The International League of Peoples’ Struggle Philippines strongly denounces the assassination of the National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) political consultant Randall ‘Randy’ Echanis. Echanis was also deputy secretary general of peasant organization Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP), a member organization of the ILPS Philippines. Echanis is the third NDFP consultant to be killed under the Duterte regime.
The slaughter of NDFP political consultants since 2017 attests to the Duterte regime’s insincerity in addressing the roots of armed conflict and pursuing the peace process. The New People’s Army, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, is composed mainly of peasants in the countryside struggling for land redistribution from the landlord class to landless peasants. Echanis was known for his advocacy of land reform and has contributed to the drafting of the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill (GARB) which remains stale and unsigned in Congress and the Comprehensive Agreement on Socio-Economic Reforms (CASER) between the NDFP and the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP).
The government’s refusal to tackle the basic ills of Philippine society such as the landlessness of peasants is aligned with the interests of Duterte’s imperial masters, the US and China, who benefit from exploiting our country’s backward agricultural sector and reserve surplus labor. The butchering of activists, the silencing of critics and the general culture of impunity reveals the class nature of the state and its function as an instrument of class rule.
The ILPS Philippines seeks the support of the international community to stand against Duterte’s de facto martial law, to cry out against the rising death toll under the Duterte regime, and to promote the pursuit of long-lasting and just peace through addressing the social ills of the country.
The ILPS Philippines, its member organizations, and the masses of Filipino people are enraged at the Duterte regime’s extrajudicial killings. We call for the abolition of the draconian Anti-Terror Law, which endangers the lives of activists by tagging them as terrorists. We call for an end to impunity and a stop to the attacks on activists. We demand justice for the death of Randall Echanis and liberation from Duterte’s tyranny!
Activism is not terrorism!
Justice for Randall Echanis!
Down with imperialism!
